Legalize Marijuana
Marijuana, or hemp, is the dried leaves and female flowers of the hemp plant, used in a cigarette form as a narcotic or hallucinogen. Whether you call it marijuana, hash, pot, weed, Mary Jane or dope, over 11 million people smoked it last month in the US. These people could have been arrested, because of the massive war on drugs that has put a huge focus on marijuana without any substantial evidence.
Some people require marijuana for medical purposes. In 1972 congress added marijuana to the Controlled Substances Act, claiming that it had no medical purposes. Since then 15 out of 50 states have legalized marijuana for medical use. Marijuana has been proven to treat symptoms of Cancer, AIDS, Multiple Sclerosis, chronic pain, Glaucoma, Epilepsy and more. “Marijuana is more dangerous than legal drugs and it’s not FDA approved,” someone opposed to legalization might say. Avastin, an FDA approved drug, was proven to treat breast cancer, but long term studies showed Avastin increased life threatening symptoms of breast cancer. The FDA also approved an H1N1 vaccine which contained ingredients known to cause cancer and death. The FDA, or Food and Drug Association of America have been known for their inaccurate judgment and tendency to approve products from multimillion dollar companies without extensive research.
Marijuana is a natural drug and wasn't cooked in a teenagers basement with household chemicals. There are so many rules that already dictate many actions of our daily life and marijuana is one of the least dangerous drugs, so it shouldn't be a main priority when it comes to detention and prosecution. “All drugs are equal, ban them all!” That's the sort of blind statement you would hear from uneducated conservative swine; people who use marijuana don't lose their grasp on reality, stab a loved one, devour a strangers face, and jump off of a bridge like some hardcore drugs could easily do, even after a few uses. Someone who is a regular user of marijuana will most likely be to lazy to go to work and play video games all day, or will be influenced creatively to produce artwork or something similar. The most common side effects of marijuana are trouble remembering things, sleepiness, anxiety, paranoia, altered time perception, and headaches; while the most common side effects of methamphetamine are insomnia, irregular heartbeat, hallucinations, increased aggressive or violent behavior, damage to brain, meth mouth, and death.
If you look at death statistics (all statistics from drugwarfacts.org) tobacco is the leading cause of death with a whopping 435,000 deaths annually; alcohol 85,000 deaths annually; suicide 30,000 deaths annually; sexual behaviors 20,000 deaths annually; hardcore drugs, including methamphetamine and heroin, 17,000 deaths annually; and too small of a number to be recorded in any statistical charts for marijuana related deaths annually. The small amount of marijuana related deaths are almost always caused by the abuse of another substance or condition along with the marijuana. In order to overdose on marijuana you would have to swallow over 70 grams which is about 5,000 times the amount the majority of people get high off of..
Almost two million arrests in 2009 were marijuana related. The war on marijuana is brutal on our government and our law enforcement agencies. Our government would end up profiting even more if marijuana was legalized. Our law enforcement has wasted countless hours chasing down citizens with marijuana, not to mention court sessions and jail time which takes up time and money which our government is already dangerously low on. Overall our economy would improve and the quality of marijuana would increase, unfortunately the price will probably increase as well but, programs aimed at helping citizens in poverty receive their medical marijuana would be put in place and it would be more difficult for minors to obtain.
Some who are still opposed have also argued that marijuana is a gateway drug. It isn’t because statistics show that if marijuana is used by someone in their younger years they will continue to use it or use it again later on in life, but smaller percentages will move on to harsher drugs. In some instances marijuana has also been proven to make people enjoy work and everyday activities even more. If marijuana is a gateway drug I guess alcohol and cigarettes are a gateway drugs as well, they are just as likely to make you want to downgrade (moving to a harsher more chemical based drug.) Addictive, damages lung and impairs driving abilities are side effects that have been argued against marijuana but, those are also side effects of drinking alcohol and smoking tobacco.
We’ve covered a lot of ground and discovered marijuana can be a helpful tool in the medical field, it is a natural substance, it'salmost never a cause of death, our government and law enforcement would save money and time and our economy would improve if it was legalized and its not a gateway drug. I hope you have gained some knowledge and spread this information to others. Thank you.
